On a tree-lined corner in Queens sits a gleaming new restaurant that has lucky Astorians and trekkers from other boroughs chomping through grass-fed burgers and organic fries. Bare Burger is bright and lively, with cute green booths and an almost Californian air – if it weren’t for the N/W train thundering nearby. The menu abounds with options, so your carb-free friend, vegetarian buddy, sustainable carnivore and adventurous foodie will all find something to enjoy. There are nine styles of burgers to pick from as well as a small list of rotating specials. You can choose the bun – brioche, 7-grain, wrap, or wrapped in lettuce; the burger – beef, turkey, chicken, veggie, portabella mushroom, bison, elk, or even ostrich; and also from a slew of cheeses, toppings, sides, and condiments (including organic ketchup). Their namesake is the Original Bare Burger, made from Piedmontese beef with a thin mantle of cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, red onion, and a tasty special sauce. Though classic, there are much more interesting options. A spicy bacon elk burger drips with juice and flavor while even the veggie burger is an especially moist patty of grains and legumes, made buttery with avocado. If dining with fork and knife is more your style (not to mention a good way to get in your greens), there are a handful of salads on the menu. The baby arugula, Pepper Jack cheese, avocado, and walnut salad we tried was a little underdressed but could make a meal with all of the fixings. Little touches like agave nectar for sweetening coffee and tea, various dipping sauces, and a kid’s menu show that Bare Burger is eager to please. With all of the options it is easy to overindulge; remember, an organic milkshake is still a milkshake. Nevertheless, if you are going for the burger, fries, and shake trinity, then it may as well be at a luscious, organic, eco-conscious restaurant that has low-energy toilets and walls lined with sustainable cork. This is guilt-free fast food to hop the East River for. Written by Scarlett Lindeman |
